More information
for participants

Hey throat singer! Here’s some important information to help you prepare for your performance in the Throat Singing Competition on August 30th. For general info check the main competition page.

Are all styles of throat singing allowed?

Yes! Whether you sing Mongolian, Tuvan or your own unique interpretation inspired by these traditions — all are very much welcome. As long as your performance is clearly connected to the Central Asian throat singing arts, you’re in the right place.

Performance guidelines

Your performance should consist of two parts:

  • A cappella section
Showcase your vocal technique without instruments or microphone. This is your moment to let the raw sound of your throat singing shine.
  • Instrumental section
Perform with an instrument of your choice — traditional or modern. You can play a traditional song, original composition, or improvisation. → If you don’t play an instrument, no problem! You may also choose to perform an additional fully a cappella piece.
Time limit

Your total performance time must not exceed 8 minutes.
Please practice and time your performance in advance to help us stay on schedule.

The location of the competition

Your performance will be on a small stage in the main building of the festival. It's a small room suitable for small, up-close performances, with a maximum of 80 people in the room. For this competition, we don't expect the room to be fully full, as we try to minimize people walking in and out constantly during the competition. But we'll try to let people in, if they are interested in listening to you perform! The jury is directly in front of the stage.

What will the jury be looking for?

Performances will be evaluated on three main criteria:

  • Technique – Mastery, control, and clarity of throat singing technique(s).
  • Musicality – Tone, flow, harmony, expression, and overall musical quality.
  • Creativity – Personal style, originality, artistic interpretation.

The jury may also take note of remarkable or unique elements in your performance.

Microphones and Sound Setup

We’ve received several questions about this — here’s what to expect:

  • A cappella section: must be performed acoustically, without a microphone.
  • Instrumental section:
    You may choose to:
    • Perform with a voice mic or without amplification
    • Use one of our amplifiers for your instrument, if needed

There will be no live sound engineer during the competition, but all basic equipment will be set up and tested in advance.

August 29 – Optional Jam and Practice Day

On August 29, the day before the competition, we’ll open up the stage for all participants. This is your chance to:

  • Jam with other singers
  • Practice your performance on the stage
  • Check sound and mic preferences
  • Meet the community and enjoy the vibes!

We warmly invite you to join us — it's a relaxed and fun day to connect and get comfortable before the big event.
