How does the competition work?

For our first edition, we’re keeping it fairly simple. In a single round, each participant performs one piece a cappella and one piece with an instrument of choice. Don't you play an instrument? No worries, it's optional: in the end it's all about your throat singing after all!

The jury will judge performances on technique, creativity, and musicality. Winners in Beginner, Intermediate, and Professional categories receive a custom prize!

More information
for participants

Do participants need to buy a ticket?

No, participating in the competition and joining the festival — including workshops and community activities — is completely free. However, if you would like to attend the evening concerts, a ticket is required.

As this is the first edition of our festival, ticket sales help us bring the concerts and special programming to life. By purchasing a ticket, you directly support the artists and the future of Echoes of the Steppe. We deeply appreciate your support!

Can anyone join the competition?

Absolutely! We welcome everyone—from beginners who are just starting their throat singing journey, to intermediate singers with solid skills who don’t yet consider themselves professionals, and of course, experienced professionals as well. No matter your level, we invite you to share your skills with us!

Are all styles of throat singing allowed?

Yes! Whether you sing Mongolian, Tuvan, or Altaian techniques and styles of throat singing, or bring your own unique twist inspired by these traditions, you are welcome to participate. As long as your performance is connected to Central Asian throat singing arts and traditions, you’re in the right place! Our jury has extensive experience in performing, researching, and listening to a wide variety of throat singing styles, and we’re excited to hear the diversity of talent from all of you.

One round to show us what you’ve got

For our first edition, we’re keeping it simple: you have one chance to impress the jury. Ideally, your performance consists of two parts:

  • A cappella throat singing (without an instrument), so the jury can hear your technique in full detail.
  • A throat singing performance accompanied by an instrument of your choice (traditional or modern).

Don't play an instrument? No problem! You can still perform a fully a cappella piece—this competition is all about your throat singing skills after all.

What will the jury be looking for?

The jury will evaluate performances based on three main criteria:

  • Technique – The quality, precision, and understanding of throat singing techniques.
  • Musicality – The tone, depth, details and overall musical expressiveness of your performance.
  • Creativity – Your unique interpretation, artistic choices, and personal style.

Additionally, the jury may make specific notes on remarkable elements in your performance.

What can you win?

Of course, there will be prizes (but we keep them a surprise)! In each category—Beginner, Intermediate, and Professional—a winner will receive a special award at the first Throat Singing Competition in Europe.

However, we truly believe that participating is far more important than winning a trophy. This competition is about bringing together a community of people who share a deep passion for throat singing. That alone makes us all winners—the trophies are just a way to honor those who stand out in a special way.
